Round 9 Match Reports (2022)

Senior Men:

La Trobe 13.19 (97) defeated Box Hill North AFC 6.5 (41)
Goal Kickers: Riley Alexander 3, Liam Walsh 2, Pat Lindsay 2, Bryce Dowler 2, Tate Spiteri 2, Ernie Fan, Dominic Tracy
Best Players: Tom Whelan, Tyler Costa, Pat Lindsay, Sam Benetti-Baker, Will Lowry, Archie Conboy

Refreshed from the bye and a change in personnel with six forced changes, our boys continued their form with six unanswered first quarter goals. The second term saw much of the same as we kept Box Hill North goalless for the half but unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalise on the scoreboard kicking 2.5 for the quarter. Darcy Thorn made the most of his return to senior footy out on the wings, while Adrian Marulli and Will Lowry both returning after a week off against Swinburne didn’t miss a beat playing their roles down back.

Coming out from the halftime break with a comprehensive 55-point lead and down two midfielders the magnets had to be shifted slightly but that just demonstrated that we had the depth across the ground to cover these key losses. While inaccurate kicking in front of goal cost us a chance to extend the lead in the third quarter with the wind our forward pressure was up, and all six forwards managed to hit the scoreboard with an even spread of goalkickers for the day. Sam Benetti-Baker did his usual selfless tagging job to stop Box Hill North’s most dominant midfielder and we managed to hold onto our nine-goal lead to finish the game 56-point winners.

Tom Whelan was at his sensational best across half back all game, while Tyler Costa ensured he was going to win every ground ball for the day. Pat Lindsay was back to his best as he danced around the arcs and delivered cleanly inside fifty. We now sit 6-1 with a healthy percentage of 237.85% going into the Queen’s Birthday weekend break.

Senior Women:

La Trobe 1.0 (6) defeated by Hampton Rovers 13.18 (96)
Goal Kickers: Kate Bond
Best Players: Kate Bond, Steph Castagnini, Eve Conlan, Elise Freeman, Courtney Donoghue, Nat Cappelletti

Despite the cold weather the Trober women prepared for a win against the very talented Hampton Rovers.

They were consistently strong in defence throughout the game, with Steph Castagnini leading the troops. Every player was willing to put their body on the line and create a competitive style of footy.

Even though Hampton where able to get a few quick goals, the Trober spirit wasn’t dampened. Kate Bond stood up and led the pack, playing an impeccable game and scoring the Trober’s only goal for the game.

Co captain Teresa D’Angelo also played a strong match, weaving in and out of the pack and creating a clear runway for our forwards to gain possession.

The Trober’s will now have a well deserved week off for the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Enabling them to rest their tired and bruised bodies.

Go Trober’s!!

Reserve Men:

La Trobe 16.11 (107) defeated Box Hill North AFC 6.7 (43)
Goal Kickers: Jordy O’Brien 8, Laughlin Cargnali 4, Ricky Nolan, Elias Papworth, Josh Rogerson, Cameron Marcroft
Best Players: Jordy O’Brien, Ricky Nolan, Tom Hatty, Josh Rogerson, Laughlin Cargnali, Angus Tickner

The Reserves were on the road again as they headed back to Elgar Park to take on Box Hill North for the second time this year. This round would see the return of Ricky Nolan, Josh Rogerson and Tom Hatty from long-term injuries.

Our Skipper Jordy ‘Jobba’ O’Brien won the toss and elected to kick with a very strong breeze. The first quarter was mainly one way traffic with Lachie Cargnali slotting a major, as well as the returning Ricky Nolan would also kicking truly, but Jobba was the man of the moment kicking 5 goals for the quarter.

The boys didn’t quite adjust to the windy conditions, struggling to move the ball cleanly against the breeze. Box Hill North were able to get a run on and managed to hold La Trobe goalless for the second quarter, dragging the half-time margin back to 3 goals.

The Trobers came out after half-time and managed to get back on top, largely due to Angus Tickner and the midfield getting first use from Tom Hatty’s continued dominance in the ruck. Jobba and Lachie would slot another 2 goals each.

The final term would see the Reserves make the required adjustments and move the ball successfully into the breeze. Some great work out of the centre clearances from Mackenzie Mann saw the forwards get first use and kick truly.

Lachie Cargnali would kick another to give him 4 for the game and Jobba would also slot another giving him a final total of 8. Elias Papworth and Cameron Marcroft would kick their first majors as La Trobe players. Josh Rogerson would also complete is return from injury taking a strong mark and kicking truly, made all the more impressive due to the fact he had to go pick his head up from centre half back after a very late hit from the Box Hill North full back!
