An absolute ripsnorter of a win on the road secured a spot in the finals for La Trobe Seniors on the weekend. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the Narre Warren bogans were riding their dirt bikes past the ground.

It was a Round 17 clash with a genuine final’s feel about it – 1 v 4, and my word the game lived up to the hype. La Trobe started well kicking the first 2 goals – there was a buzz about the boys and St Francis knew it. La Trobe held a 1-point lead at half time and were a goal down at three quarter time.

The last quarter is where the game came to life. There was drama: St Francis big man Harry Coe needing four goals to reach the magical 100 – he ended up kicking 3.6 and hitting the post twice in the last term! The second time he hit the post put St Francis up by 14 points with about 5 minutes to play as the hysteria surrounding that moment overcame the home side.

La Trobe went to work. Mitch Oliver said, “come with me boys” as he was kicking them from everywhere. The midfield took over, with the likes of Tom Mooney and Benetti-Baker lifting immensely. With a minute to go La Trobe kicked a goal and the deficit was just 3 points. There was a vibe about the joint. The next 30 seconds of play was a grind, a quagmire of bodies diving about and then suddenly, a quick handball squirts out to Harry Thackray, he chucks it on the boot, and it glides straight onto Bailey Zimmermann’s slender chest. Fifty metres out, it would be a tough kick – but like some divine intervention, the St Francis defender loses his mind and runs over the mark giving away a 50-metre penalty and all but sealing the deal. There were shades of Jim Stynes in the ’87 prelim running through the mark! As Zimmer nailed the shot from the synthetic goal square, the game was done and one of the best wins the Club has had in recent times was complete!

A magical day will now colloquially and fittingly be remembered as ‘the miracle on dead grass’.

It was another outstanding win for The Midday Show over the weekend, dominating St Francis Xavier 103-51 in Narre Warren South. The conditions couldn’t have been any better for footy as 2nd and 3rd clashed, with the winner snagging 2nd position leading into the finals.

The first half was governed by hotly contested footy from both teams with the Trobers only nudging out a four-goal lead by the end of the second. Heading into the third quarter the ball began to move easier for La Trobe and the goals continued well into the fourth as Michael Burrowes and Scott Pearson snagged three each for the day.

Next week La Trobe head to Albert Park to play first placed, South Melbourne Districts in a top of a ladder clash as the last game of the regular season. Last time South Melbourne and La Trobe met back in the Round 1; South Melbourne scoring a 10-point win in what was a very even game.
