Along with the many other milestones La Trobe University Football Club have ticked off this year, there was one more we were awaiting to celebrate on June 20. In what was promised to be a special day with a history-making milestone, La Trobe University Football Club announced its first ever Women’s Team of the Decade for the 2009-18 era.
The day began with Club President Samantha Greene addressing the new and old faces of La Trobe, welcoming them to our new home. Samantha opened by reminiscing on her early years as a women’s footballer, including reciting the remarkable premiership in 2011 – only two years after establishing a women’s side. A lot has changed in 11 years, not only with the Club, but also with women’s football in general. When La Trobe University Football Club inaugurated a women’s side, there was approximately 35 registered women teams in 2009, where we fast forward to today and there are now over 1,000.
Speeches throughout the day recognised the past and present of the Club and the fundamental people involved to help establish the women’s football at La Trobe University; one of these key founders included Jess Smith in whom we were fortunate enough to have present on the day and share with us her memories on the early days of La Trobe University Football Club Women’s side. Following the formal proceedings of the 24 remarkable women being selected in the Inaugural Women’s Team of the Decade, club legend and games record holder Tony Sheehan took to the stage to present Samantha Greene her well-deserved Life Membership at La Trobe University Football Club for her 11 years of service to our Club. This was a fitting event to present Samantha’s Life Membership to her as her recognition was celebrated with players in all eras of her football career. We congratulate Samantha Greene once again for her stellar contribution given to the Club on and off the field. With old and new faces around our new home, it was a great day to celebrate the past and present, and we congratulate the players acknowledged in the 2009-18 Women’s Team of the Decade.
